Anxiety - Care for mental health

What is anxiety?

-Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stressful situations. It is that feeling of fear, apprehension, nervousness that we feel on the first day of school, while going to a job interview, or up on a stage with an audience.

Ordinary anxiety is a feeling that comes and goes, but doesn’t interfere with your daily life.

In case of an anxiety disorder, the feeling of fear may be with you all the time. It is intense and sometimes debilitating.

Anxiety can come in different forms, sometimes unannounced. These include:

  1. panic disorder - experiencing recurrent panic attacks at unexpected times.
  2. phobia - excessive fear of a specific object, situation, or activity.
  3. social anxiety disorder - excessive fear of being judged by others at social gatherings.
  4. obsessive-compulsive disorder - recurring irrational thoughts that lead you to perform specific, repeated behaviours.
  5. separation anxiety disorder - fear of being away from home or loved ones.
  6. post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - anxiety following a traumatic event.

Causes for anxiety:

Researchers are not sure of the exact cause of anxiety, but it’s likely a combination of factors like:

  1. genetic engineering
  2. surrounding environment
  3. brain chemistry, specifically the area that controls fear

Treatment for anxiety:

It falls in two categories: psychotherapy and medication

For some people, medical treatment is not necessary. Lifestyle changes may be enough to cope with mild symptoms.

Natural remedies for anxiety:

Caring for your body, participating in healthy activities are the prime natural ‘remedies’. Others are:

  1. getting enough sleep
  2. meditating
  3. staying active and exercising
  4. eating a healthy diet
  5. staying active and working out
  6. avoiding alcohol
  7. avoiding caffeine
  8. quitting smoking cigarettes

Foods that help treat anxiety:

  1. salmon
  2. chamomile
  3. turmeric
  4. dark chocolate
  5. yogurt
  6. green tea

Some people who have a mild anxiety disorder decide to live with the condition and to not seek treatment.

It’s important to understand that anxiety disorders can be treated, even in severe cases.

Although anxiety doesn’t usually go away, you can learn to manage it and live a happy, healthy life.
